Sudanese have braced for massive protests demanding that power be handed over to the civilian military after it took over last October, exacerbating the country’s political and economic crisis.

Forces for Freedom and Change, a coalition of civilian forces, said in its call for demonstrations on Thursday that “June 30 is our way of overthrowing the coup and cutting off any imagined alternatives,” urging protesters to “demonstrate effectively.” “

Pro-democracy activists on social media called for “protests under the slogan of a million people, an earthquake on June 30.”

On this day, demonstrations were held in and around Khartoum calling for mass protests. On the eve of the protests, Sudanese security forces killed a demonstrator during rallies organized on Wednesday evening. The pro-democracy Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors reported that “a protester died from a gunshot to the chest during rallies in northern Khartoum.”

This brings the death toll in the crackdown to 103 since the October 25 seizure of power by the army led by Army Commander Abdel Fattah al-Buran. The authorities have tightened security measures in the capital Khartoum and neighboring cities, despite the lifting of a state of emergency imposed after the army seized power.
