Carlos Sainz’s celebration for his first Formula One world championship victory turned to sadness last week after he retired from the Austrian Grand Prix after his engine caught fire while he was close to finishing second.

Sainz’s car suddenly caught fire and he immediately left the place before the competent teams could control the fire.
The Spanish driver, who won at Silverstone last Sunday, said his engine burned out at the Red Bull circuit without warning.

He told Sky Sports: “There was no sign from the engine that it was going to happen, (it was) very surprising. I was a bit lost for words because we lost so many points at the end and the possibility of a result We have excellent. It was easy to get the first two places today.”
After the car was stopped by the stewards, Sainz sat at the side of the track, surprised at his bad luck.
His teammate Charles Leclerc won the race, beating world championship leader Max Verstappen despite gas problems.
Sainz, fourth in the standings, said: “It’s more difficult because we were about to drop points with the championship leaders and we were about to get a very big result for the team.” “Keep pushing, keep turning the tables and we’ve still got a long season ahead of us.”
Team principal Mattia Binotto said Ferrari’s second win in a row after a run of six for Red Bull was important for morale, even though Leclerc is now 38 points behind Verstappen.
