COVID-19. German minister warns of social repercussions of the so-called “long covid”

The German Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach, warned this Sunday of the repercussions that the so-called post-Covid-19 syndrome will have for society and the labor market, as well as for the health system in Germany.

“We do not have the capacity to handle the many cases that will be. We don’t have enough specialist doctors, we don’t have enough therapeutic capabilities and there are still no suitable medicines,” Lauterbach said in an interview with Die Zeit weekly.

The problems related to the “Long Covid”, according to Lauterbach, are often underestimated and its repercussions not only affect those who suffer from it and the health system, but also can affect the labor market.

“It is also relevant for the labor market because many, unfortunately, will never have the same work capacity again”, pointed.

Lauterbach expressed his hope that there will soon be a vaccine that arrives specifically the various recent variants.

“We hope that they protect not only against a serious development of the disease, but also against infection and therefore also against the long Covid,” he explained.

Germany lives what has been so-called summer wave with a high level of contagionalthough it does not have a clear impact on hospitalization and there is concern about what may happen in autumn and winter.

Lauterbach has repeatedly called for the legal conditions to be created so that some restrictions can be reintroduced in the fall.

The weekly incidence, according to the latest data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for virology, is 672.9 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in Germany.

However, it is considered that the real incidence should be higher, since many of the cases are no longer diagnosed by PCR and are left out of the statistics.

Since the beginning of the pandemic there have been 29,022,265 confirmed infections in Germany and 141,862 people died from disease-related causes.
