Today, Tuesday, the World Health Organization revealed that the coronavirus is a global emergency, almost two and a half years after it was first declared.
The emergency committee of independent experts explained in a statement that “the increase in cases, the continued development of the virus and the pressure on health services in a number of countries means that the situation remains a state of emergency.”
“Cases reported to the World Health Organization have increased by 30 percent in the past two weeks, despite the committee recognizing that population immunity to vaccines has greatly increased,” the statement added.
For his part, the director-general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, accepted the committee’s recommendation.
The United Nations Health Agency first declared the highest level of alert, known as a public health emergency of international concern, for COVID-19 on January 30, 2020.
This decision could help accelerate research, funding and international public health measures to contain the disease.
