Ivana, ex-wife of Donald Trump, has died. “A wonderful, beautiful and incredible woman,” says the former US president.

Ivana Trump, ex-wife of former US President Donald Trump, died Thursday at her home in New York. The news was announced by the former US head of state in a message posted on the social network that he created, in which there was no lack of praise for the first woman, who turned 73.

In a statement, the Trump family remembered Ivana as a woman who “fled communism and embraced the United States” and “that he instilled in his children courage and resilience, compassion and determination.”

Ivana Zelnickova was born in 1949 in the city of Gottwaldov (ex-Czechoslovakia), in the former communist Eastern Bloc, later emigrating to the United States. The marriage between Donald Trump and the businesswoman and model Ivana lasted 15 years and the couple stood out in high society New York during the 1980s.

They separated after Donald Trump joined Marla Maples, whom he would later marry, in a union from which Tiffany Trump was born. The former president also celebrated a third marriage, with former model Melania Trump, his current wife and former first ladymother of her fifth child, Barron.

Over the years, Ivana normalized her relationship with Donald Trump and, as she wrote in a 2017 book, the two spoke once a week. Ivana told the New York Post in 2016, the year Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States, that she supported and advised his ex-husband.

“I suggest some things” to Donald Trump, he told the newspaper. “We talk before and after his public appearances and he wonders what I think.” According to Ivana, her main advice was that Donald “be calmer”. “But Donald cannot stay calm (…) he is very frank, he says things as they are,” she concluded.
