WATCH: Mexico City police battle a belt-fed Sinaloa cartel machine gun

Mexican authorities sparked a major clash outside of Mexico City, where the Sinaloa cartel was holding the victims of kidnapping.

The clash took place this week on the Mexico City-Cuernavaca highway in the Tlalpan region, and gunmen opened fire on police vehicles patrolling the area. The officers sought protection, tried to resist and asked for reinforcements. Hundreds of police officers who came to the scene followed the attackers in their hiding places. According to information released by Mexico City Police Chief Omar García Harfuh, at least 14 gunmen in the home attempted to repulse law enforcement using heavy weapons, including a belt-fed machine gun, grenades, and a 50-caliber rifle.

Harfuch added that after the clash, authorities conducted an extensive search and arrested 12 militants near the house and two in a nearby car, injuring four of his officers. One is in critical condition.

Inside the house, authorities rescued the four abducted victims. According to Harfuch, one of the victims had been in custody for more than 20 days. The chief of police said the kidnappings had nothing to do with the ransom and due to the discovery the missing persons were not known.

Among the items seized, authorities found police badges identifying the militants as members of the “special forces” unit of the Sinaloa cartel. Harfuch said the gunmen were not from Mexico City, but had arrived in the area two months ago.
