Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky expressed his intention to propose a revision of the foundations of relations with Russia, based on what he called “new threats” to the EU countries.
Ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, where the Czech Republic currently holds the European Union presidency, he indicated that “a detailed discussion could take place at an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in the Czech capital, Prague, at the end of August next year.” He explained that “there are a number of basic principles underlying the relationship between the European Union and Russia that need to be updated and adapted to the new reality of hostility, and we must be ready to confront Russian threats.” .”
On Monday, July 18, EU foreign ministers will discuss sanctions against Russia, as well as assistance to Ukraine, as new measures are expected to include restrictions on Russian gold imports and new individual sanctions. An EU source said: “This meeting will not be about a new package of sanctions, but about strengthening and improving the process of existing procedures.”
