Former British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak remained in the lead in the race to succeed Boris Johnson at Downing Street, with 118 votes in a new vote by Conservative Party lawmakers that showed a close race for second place.

After the fourth ballot, Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Penny Mordaunt remained in second place with 92 votes, followed by Secretary of State Liz Truss (86 votes), according to the results announced by Graham Brady, who is responsible for organizing the internal vote.

Former Minister of State for Equality Kimi Badenok, who represents the party’s right wing, was eliminated from the race with 59 votes.

This internal vote in the Conservative Party follows Boris Johnson’s July 7 announcement of his resignation as prime minister following a wave of resignations in his government following a series of scandals.

The fifth and final vote for Conservative MPs will be held on Wednesday to limit competition between the two final candidates between which 200,000 affiliated parties will choose a leader by mail-in voting, with the result announced on September 5.
