Mozambique. The US announces additional support of 114 million euros for displaced people in Cabo Delgado

The United States of America will contribute an additional 116 million dollars (114 million euros) this year to support those displaced by armed violence in Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique, an official source announced on Wednesday.

With the new amount, amounts to 167 million dollars (164 million euros) US aid to Mozambique this year, said Urza Zeya, US Undersecretary for Civil Security, Democracy and Human Rights, during a press conference following a meeting with Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi.

With this support, the US will help around 800,000 internally displaced people,” Urza Zeya said, noting that the amount will be used for “food and nutritional assistance and to meet the health, water and agricultural needs” of the displaced.

Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique is rich in natural gas but has been terrorized since 2017 by armed rebels, with some attacks claimed by the Islamic State extremist group.

There are some 800,000 internally displaced persons due to the conflict, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and some 4,000 dead, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.

Since July 2021, an offensive by government troops with the support of Rwanda, to which the SADC later joined, has allowed the recapture of areas where there was a presence of rebels, but their flight has provoked new attacks in other districts used as passageways. or refuge.
