France will support the training of military personnel in Guinea-Bissau, French President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday at the end of a few-hour visit to Bissau.
France wants and will help Guinea-Bissau, even now that the President [guineense, Umaro] Sissoco Embaló is interim president of ECOWAS [Comunidade Económica dos Estados da África Ocidental]”, declared Emmanuel Macron.
Macron made the announcement in a joint statement with his Guinean counterpart, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, at the end of a few-hour visit to Guinea-Bissau.
The training of Guinean soldiers is part of the support program for Guinea-Bissau in the combat drug trafficking, maritime piracy and also help stabilize the country.
Macron arrived in Bissau on Wednesday at 11 p.m. and was received at the airport by his Guinean counterpart.
On a journey of about eight kilometers between the Osvaldo Vieira international airport and the center of Bissau, the French head of state and Sissoco Embaló were received by thousands of people to the sound of music and “I greet the President of France”.
Macron arrived in Bissau for the first visit of a French head of state to Guinea-Bissauas part of a tour that took him to Benin and Cameroon, returning to Paris in the early afternoon.
