The Mozambican council wants to reinforce the road inspection in the face of the “high rate” of accidents

The Mozambican Security and Defense Council called for stronger measures to monitor and hold offenders accountable, given the “high rate of traffic accidents” in the country, according to a statement from the Mozambican Presidency.

The agency urged the competent institutions to strengthen inspection measures, as well as the accountability of offenders of the Traffic Code and other legal instruments,” says the presidential statement, after a meeting of the agency on Wednesday in Maputo.

The National Security and Defense Council expressed concern about the high rate of traffic accidents that occur in the country, considering that the situations have “sowed pain in Mozambican families and caused considerable material damage.”

Traffic accident rates in Mozambique are classified as dramatic by various organizations.

Mozambican authorities announced on Friday that they will immediately arrest delinquent drivers who are involved in accidents resulting in death, as part of the measures adopted to curb the high accident rates in the country.

According to the Mozambican government, the announced measures also include a review of speed limits and road signs, especially at points identified as critical.

The Mozambican authorities have indicated the speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol as the main causes of accidents.

On average, at least a thousand people die annually on the roads, according to data provided to Lusa by the Association of Victims of Road Insecurity of Mozambique (Amviro).
