Trial of Muslim Honor Killings in Egypt Begins in Texas

An Egyptian citizen will be tried in Texas for allegedly killing her two daughters by their non-Muslim boyfriends as an “honour killing”.

This week, jurors in Dallas began hearing testimonies about the murder of 18-year-old and 17-year-old Amina Said in 2008. Their 65-year-old father, Yasser Abdel Said, lived legally in Texas and went into hiding after allegedly killing the teenagers. for 12 years. According to Fox News, he faces the death penalty, but prosecutors do not want the death penalty.

Two of Said’s relatives, Islam and Yasein Said, were sentenced to long prison terms last year for aiding in Yasser’s alleged escape. Prosecutors said on the day of the murder, Said would take the two girls in his taxi to a restaurant in Lewisville, instead taking them to Irving, where he shot them.

Their daughters flee to Oklahoma first and plan to start a new life away from their father, but their mother persuades them to return. Dallas Morning News reported.

A Texas newspaper quoted Amina’s then-boyfriend, Edgar Ruiz, saying, “He knew he was going to die.”

Prosecutors claimed that the elderly Said was obsessed with controlling his wife and daughters and had previously held a gun to Amina’s head.
Part of her anger is reportedly due to her daughters being too American with non-Muslim boyfriends.
