The President of the Government of the Azores considers it “beautiful ambition” to have an Olympic athlete from the region

The President of the Government of the Azores considered this Wednesday as a “beautiful ambition” to have an Olympian from the region in the next few years, admitting a “reformulation” of the high-performance sports policy.

“I think it is a great ambition for us to be able to work on the reformulation of the high-performance sports policy in the Azores. It is both an opportunity and a challenge.. We are already here doing a good ballast because it is a sport [ginástica aeróbica] our performance and our commitment to it and to training may well be justified. Accepted as a good goal for governance of a decade to achieve these results“, declared José Manuel Bolieiro.

The President of the Government of the Azores received in audience in Ponta Delgada the junior aerobics world champion, Azorean Tiago Pinheirogymnast of the Gymnastic Activities Club of Ponta Delgada (CAGPD).

José Manuel Bolieiro highlighted the “a lot of effort and talent, associated with training, with the desire to overcome the limitations and an installed training and school capacitythat praises the Azores in the capacity they have”.

The world champion Tiago Pinheiro considered, in turn, that “with a little effort you can achieve everythingreconciling school with training for three hours a day and “giving up holidays and vacations to achieve what has been achieved”.

Tiago Pinheiro, who took third place in the world championship in 2021, now wants, after becoming champion, secure first place at the European Championships in 2023in Turkey, with the support of coach Alexandra Barroso.

The athlete is a member of the Gymnastic Activities Club of Ponta Delgada, a Public Sports Utility Institution (JO Nº72-2ªSÉRIE-12-4-11) that emerged in 2008, in the continuity of the work carried out by Ginásio Corpore (1992).

The club promotes various gymnastics disciplines on the island of São Miguel, namely aerobic gymnastics with athletes from the national team and high-performance athletes.

The club boasts a number of distinguished athletes at various levels in the sport nationally and internationally.
