German consul in Rio de Janeiro arrested on suspicion of killing her husband

Brazilian police said Sunday that they had arrested the German consul in Rio de Janeiro, Uwe Herbert Hahn, suspected of murdering her Belgian husband at his home in the Ipanema neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro.

According to France-Presse (AFP), Uwe Herbert Hahn told the authorities that her husband, Walter Biot, a Belgian national, collapsed suddenly on Friday night and hit his head, which would have caused his death.

However, according to the first analysis of the body, carried out in the couple’s apartment in the exclusive neighborhood of Ipanema, the victim was violently beaten.

“The version of the facts given by the consul, according to which the victim fell, is incompatible with the conclusions of the experts,” said the agent Camila Lourenço, in a publication on the social networks of the local police.

According to the authorities, “several bruises were observed, including on the torso, corresponding to run-over injuries, as well as injuries corresponding to an attack with a cylindrical object.”

Photos of what appear to be bloodstains on the floor and furniture in the couple’s apartment were posted on the local police Instagram account.

According to local media, the German consul tried to clean up the crime scene before the police arrived.

Uwe Herbert Hahn also told police that her husband abused alcohol and took sleeping pills.

Walter Biot was a week shy of his 53rd birthday, according to a photo of his identity document, published by the Brazilian press.

The German Embassy in Brasilia has not yet responded to AFP requests for information.
