The giant of social networks “Facebook” is being sued, and this time the plaintiff is not a state or an organization, but an American woman living in Colorado.
In the details of the report of the English newspaper “Daily Mail”, an American woman living in Colorado sued Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and said that her daughter was addicted to this digital platform.
He added: “The girl has been addicted to Facebook since she was seven years old, and due to her addiction and problematic use of the digital platform, in addition to harming herself, she has developed an eating disorder.”
The mother, Cecilia Tisch, said her daughter, identified by the initials “RF” in court documents, is now 13.
Self-harm is one of the symptoms of individual disorders in which a person deliberately injures his body, such as biting and burning, but does not reach the stage of suicide, and the person feels a kind of relief after this action. Guilt and shame come later, according to the Mayo Clinic website.
The mother says her daughter stays up all night to follow the Facebook alerts.
According to the lawsuit, the girl’s addiction to the site reduced her interest in other activities, and her sleep was disrupted by the app’s “continuous alerts.”
Facebook’s bylaws state that the platform is available to people 13 and older, and it’s unclear what measures — if any — the mother took to curb her daughter’s addiction to the platform.
But she said teenagers use social networking sites more than others, and said she and her daughter were unaware of the harms of extensive Facebook use.
This is not the first time that communication platforms have been criticized for the addiction of teenagers, since last July, 12 legal cases have been registered against Meta company, none of which has reached a conclusion.
This comes after local newspapers Meta showed it was aware of the harm it was causing among young people.
