Five months after Russia invaded Ukraine and the country’s nuclear power plants became battlefields, Zaporizhia is once again in the spotlight due to new air strikes taking place next to the structure.
The problems in Zaporizhia predate the war: since 2020, international observers have pointed to security problems at the nuclear power plant due to the lack of spare parts to renew the material and guarantee the redundancy of the systems. But the invasion of Ukraine added to the concerns. And the last four days show that the risk in the region is as high as it was in March, when Moscow forces took control of the country’s biggest energy source.
