The countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) approved on Wednesday the extension of the mandate of the organization’s military mission in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, scene of armed attacks, Angolan diplomacy reported.
According to the final communiqué of the 42nd Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of SADC, which took place in the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the “report on the security situation in the province of Cabo Delgado“.
The organization “approved the extension of the mandate of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) and the corresponding related processes”, states the note released by the Angolan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The statement does not indicate a deadline for the extension of this mission.
On July 14, the SADC had approved, in an extraordinary summit, the provisional extension of this mission, sending a final decision to the leaders’ meeting in Kinshasa. On the occasion, the countries of southern Africa pointed out that the deployment of the force had achieved “significant achievements and milestones” in the fight against “terrorism”.
SADC “provisionally” extends military mission in Mozambique
The summit saluted the Personnel Contributing Countries (PCCs) to SAMIM for their solidarity and sacrifice in support of the mission and sent condolences to the governments and families of the nine SAMIM personnel who lost their lives in the theater of operations of the meeting.
