Resistance to the Taliban in close contact with civil society in Portugal

Resistance to the Taliban regime in Afghanistan told Lusa on Saturday that it is in close contact with Portuguese civil society and the European Union (EU), regretting not having “direct relations with Portugal.”

“Unfortunately, we do not have direct relations with Portugal, but we are in close contact with Portuguese civil society,” an adviser to the Afghan ambassador to Tajikistan told the Lusa Mehran Aghbar news agency.

A year after the flight of the pro-Western Afghan government and the return of the Taliban to Kabul, the Afghan National Resistance Front (NRF) has not established relations with the Portuguese government, but has “always open doors to build” these links.

The diplomat also stressed that with the EU, of which Portugal is a member, there is “very close contact” with different partners.

“We were able to welcome high-ranking delegates from the EU to our Afghan embassy in Tajikistan, [iniciativa] which has proven to be very effective in many different areas of our anti-Taliban policy,” said Mehran Aghbar.

The NRF is also in contact with the delegation in Portugal of the Afghanistan Peace and Sport Council, an Afghanistan-based non-profit organization, he added.

The adviser to the Afghan ambassador to Tajikistan stressed that the diplomatic mission continues to “resist” outside the country, refusing to bow to the Taliban.

The Taliban regime, which returned to power in Afghanistan a year ago, is being fought, inside and outside the country, by a resistance “made up of various ethnic groups or languages,” the diplomat explained in a telephone interview with the Lusa agency.

“We will continue to resist as long as it takes, for the Taliban to accept the wishes of the people of Afghanistan,” he stressed.

“We are fighting for democracy, we are fighting for freedom and we are fighting for elections. To have a country and a government run and operated by the people,” he added.

Mehran Aghbar stressed that before and during the return to power of the Taliban, there were always efforts to carry out peace negotiations, which were never really accepted.

“They wanted to seize power militarily and they wanted to cause violence. Our doors have always been open to dialogue, to peace negotiations. But the Taliban do not accept that there are elections and a government chosen by the people”, he stressed.
