Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, in his letter to citizens, proposed holding early presidential elections this fall and revising the presidential term for one non-renewable seven-year term.

In his speech, President Tokayev stated that “the political traditions followed in the past, keeping secrets from society, should be a thing of the past” and continued his interpretation of the proposal for a presidential term: “On the one hand, 7 years is a sufficient period for the implementation of any ambitious program, and on the other hand, limiting the presidential term to one term will ensure the maximum focus of the head of state on solving the strategic tasks of national development.

“Therefore, today I intend to publicly present the schedule of future election campaigns,” Tokayev said, referring to “his proposal to hold early presidential elections in the fall of 2022, and parliamentary elections in the first half of 2023 (instead of presidential elections scheduled for 2024, parliament for 2025), emphasizing the readiness to go to early presidential elections, despite the reduction in his term of office.
