Starting this Thursday, September 1, the European Commission will have a physical presence in San Francisco, California. The choice of the place to install an office is not accidental: it is there where some of the great technologies that Brussels already investigated or even finedfrom Google to Apple.
According to a note from the European Commission on these plans, the inauguration of this kind of European “embassy” in the United States responds to a desire to “enhance the EU’s digital diplomacy in and with the United States”. Through this office, Brussels becomes a “global hub for technology and digital innovation”.
This office, which will have as its main figure the “veteran” of the European Commission Gerard de Graaf, will be in charge of the European Union delegation in Washington, the capital of the United States. In addition, this office will have a “close coordination with Brussels”, according to information provided by the European institution.
The idea, according to the note from the European institution, goes through “strengthening the capacity of the European Union to reach concerned parties public and private, including legislators, the business sector and civil society from the technology sector”. While China has been gaining ground in the digital landscape over the past decade, some of the leading companies in the industry are based in the United States, hence the interest in this strengthening of relations.
