A French professional tennis player who was ranked 39th in the world last year has accused his former coach of rape and sexual assault.
The French Tennis Federation confirmed in a statement on Saturday: “We stand by Fiona Ferro in the actions she has initiated against her former coach, Pierre Potter.”
Ferro, 25, lost in US Open qualifying last week.
This union added: We are considering the possibility of filing a civil lawsuit in this case.
“I didn’t agree,” Ferro said of Potter’s accusation.
He continued: I have full confidence in the judicial system of my country and I confirm that I do not want to comment further on the criminal investigation.
Firo is the latest tennis player to draw attention to the issue of protecting athletes from harassment by coaches.
A WTA spokeswoman said on Saturday: “We commend Fiona for her courage in coming forward with these allegations.”
The spokesperson added: “We are pleased to see a full investigation and legal follow-up. The league’s mission is to ensure a safe environment for our players. Protection requires vigilance and we continue to invest in education to improve our efforts.” ” “
