As the hopes of the West to revive the nuclear agreement with Iran faded, especially in the last period after Tehran’s response to the European proposal, Israel turned these negotiations into a conflict.
Israel’s Defense Minister Benny Gantz said today, Thursday, that the Iran nuclear deal signed with world powers in 2015 is now “in the recovery room” and likely won’t be revived anytime soon, if at all.
He also added in a speech at a conference on the fight against terrorism at Reichman University: “We will see how things will go in the next period, maybe after the elections.” Reuters
Gantz’s comments came after European leaders expressed doubts over Tehran’s willingness to revive the nuclear deal in the past two days.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell confirmed that the talks had reached an impasse. In a statement to AFP yesterday evening, Burrell expressed his fear of remaining in a stalemate with the political situation in the United States.
On Saturday, France, Britain and Germany all questioned Iran’s commitment to reviving the deal in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.
It is worth noting that on August 8, 2022, after long and complicated rounds and negotiations that started last April 2021 in Vienna and lasted for 16 months, the European Union presented the final text to overcome the deadlock of reviving this agreement.
Burrell received Iran’s first response in mid-August, after which the United States responded to Iran’s observations and demands, and later Tehran’s response came and again blew up the negotiations.
