A recent report claims that Facebook monitors private messages from US users and reports them to the FBI if they express anti-government sentiment or question the 2020 election.
New York Post It reported that Facebook is spying on private messages and data of US users. The company reportedly reports users expressing anti-government or anti-authority sentiments to the FBI. Justice Department sources say the company has also reported users questioning the legality of the 2020 elections.
As part of a joint FBI operation, a Facebook employee sent redacted versions to the Domestic Terrorism Operations Unit at FBI Headquarters in Washington DC, flagging private messages with similar sentiments from the past 19 months. All this was done without permission.
An anonymous source said, “It was done outside of the legal process and for no good reason. Facebook provides the FBI with First Amendment-protected private conversations without any subpoenas.”
Private messages were forwarded to local FBI offices in the US as “leads” and then requested a subpoena from the joint US Attorney’s office in their area to obtain the private conversations provided by Facebook.
However, the investigation of Facebook users did not reveal that they were involved in anything criminal or violent. “It was a waste of time,” said one source.
One source said all Facebook users tagged as potential terrorists were “right-wing conservatives”. “They are Americans armed with red blood. [who were] After the election, they get angry and put a bullet in their mouths and talk about the protests staged. Nothing about crime, violence, massacre or killing anyone.”
The source continued: “When the court was requested, Facebook sent gigabytes of data and photos within an hour. He was ready to leave. They’re just waiting for the case to be sent.”
Erika Sakin, spokesperson for communications, dangerous organizations and individuals at Facebook (now known as Meta), denied the allegations and said:
These claims are false because they reflect a misunderstanding of how our systems protect people from harm and how we interact with law enforcement. We review and often reject all official requests for user information to ensure they are legal and specific. We respond to requests for legal information in accordance with applicable laws and our terms and notify users when permitted.
In the “updated statement,” however, Sakin changed the statement, saying the allegations were “false” rather than “false”. The modified description is:
These claims are simply false. The suggestion that we search people’s private messages for anti-government speeches or questions about the legitimacy of past elections and then actively hand them over to the FBI is clearly false, and there is no evidence to support this.” expert and now leads Facebook messaging about “fighting terrorism and dangerous organizations and individuals.”
