Israel’s foreign ministry summoned Mexico’s ambassador to Tel Aviv on Thursday to reprimand protesters who wrote “death to Israel” on the country’s embassy building in Mexico City.
Protesters are demanding that Israel extradite a former Mexican official accused of crimes related to human rights violations and embezzlement.
Israel’s embassy in Mexico City was vandalized by protesters demanding Israel extradite a former senior official wanted in the 2014 disappearance of 43 students, the Israel Times news website said.
Demonstrators scrawled “Death to Israel” vandalized the embassy, the website added, noting that Tel Aviv summoned Mexico’s ambassador after the incident.
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nehshon told Al-Monitor: “We take this issue very seriously and we expect Mexico to fulfill its international obligations.”
The spokesman noted that the demonstrators are demanding the extradition of Tomás Ziron, the former head of Mexico’s Criminal Investigation Agency, who is currently in Israel seeking asylum, as he faces charges of serious irregularities in the investigation of one of the worst cases. is facing Human rights tragedies in the country, as well as allegations of torture and embezzlement.
He added that Ziron is wanted for undermining the investigation into the disappearance of 43 students in 2014, and is also accused of embezzling more than $50 million and torturing suspects.
And the Israeli website added that the Mexican suspect fled his country after the 2018 election of Andrés Manuel López Obrador after the mass kidnapping case was reopened, and has been in Israel ever since, seeking asylum.
Mexico had already formally requested Israel to extradite Ziron last year, but Tel Aviv did not respond to the request.
