Filipe Nyusi was re-elected this Sunday as president of the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), in power, with 100% of the votes, the party announced.
“A result that we are very proud of is the 100% Nyusi brand,” Secretary General Roque Silva said before the congress.
The vote took place during the third day of the XII Frelimo Congress, in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo and in which Nyusi, who is also President of the Republic, was the only candidate for his succession.
The leader received the votes of the 1,136 congressmen who attended the vote this Sunday, a party source told reporters.
Speaking after the elections, Filipe Nyusi promised work and called for “genuine support” like the one he says he has received so far.
The current leader of Frelimo rose to the presidency of the party in 2015, in a vote carried out by the Central Committee when Armando Guebuza left office.
Guebuza handed over the leadership of Frelimo months after Nyusi succeeded him as head of state.
Filipe Nyusi was again elected president of Frelimo in 2017, at the 11th congress, for a five-year term.
He is the current president of Mozambique, first elected in 2014 and re-elected in 2019 for the second term, which is ongoing.
The XII Frelimo Congress began on Friday and ends on Wednesday, a meeting in which the new party bodies will still be elected: the Central Committee, which will be in charge of electing the general secretary, the Political Commission and the Verification Commission.
After the congress, the election of the candidate for the 2024 presidential elections will go through the new bodies.
