Queen Elizabeth’s horses… What is King Charles looking for?

The Queen Consort is expected to take control of the royal stables as King Charles III prepares to downsize horses and lose £1m a year, The Times said on Friday 30 September 2022.

While the late Queen Elizabeth was known for her love of horse racing, King Charles, who had a brief stint as an amateur jockey in the 1980s, was less keen, leaving Camilla to work with trainers.

Charles III’s reign on the track began on Thursday with a second-place finish at Salisbury on his mother-bred horse Educator.

The purple, red and gold horse will once again appear in Perfect Alibi at Ascot with three riders including Chalk Stream, who ran a prestigious race in Australia.

The Queen had its best season last year with a total profit of £584,000. However, the cost of 50 horses in its stables is estimated to be £1.5 million a year. A source on the match said Charles wanted to cut his losses.

The late Queen spent last weekend with bloodline consultant John Warren, who believes she has bred her best horses and raced them.

“He has a lot of horses, especially with the Duchess of Cornwall,” Warren said of the king.
