Organization counts more than 90 dead in protests against the death of Masha Amini in Iran

The repression of the protests in Iran after the death of the young Masha Amini for the incorrect use of the Islamic veil has left 92 dead, the non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights (IHR) announced on Sunday.

The Norway-based organization also said that in addition to the Amini-related protests, Iranian security forces killed 41 people on fridayin Zahedan, a city in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan.

“The killings of protesters in Iran, particularly in Zahedan, constitute a crime against humanity,” IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam was quoted as saying by the French news agency AFP. “The international community has a duty to investigate and prevent the Islamic Republic” of Iran from committing further crimes, he added.

The protest in Zahedan was sparked by allegations that a police chief in the port city of Chabahar, in the same province, raped a 15 year old girl of the Sunni Baluchi minority, the NGO said.

Sistan-Baluchistan, which borders Pakistan, is one of the poorest regions in Iran and home to the Baluchi minority, whose members adhere to Sunni Islam more than the Shia religion that dominates the Islamic Republic. The identity of those killed was confirmed by the regional NGO Baluch Activists Campaign (BAC), the IHR said.

In two weeks of protests in Iran, 133 people were killed, the Oslo-based organization said.

Iran has been rocked by a wave of protests following the death of 22-year-old Masha Amini on September 16, three days after she was detained by morality police for violating a strict code on wearing women’s clothing according to Iranian laws. Republic, in particular the use of the veil.
