13 people sentenced for participation in riot at the funeral of Angolan Kudurist “Nagrelha”

Thirteen people were sentenced on Thursday for participating in a riot during the funeral of the Angolan Kudurist “Nagrelha”, the Angolan National Police announced on Friday.

The sentence came two days after the Angolan National Police arrested 14 young people suspected of vandalism, “when, allegedly, participated in the funeral of the musician “Nagrelha” from Lambasheld on Tuesday, and attended by thousands of people.

The riots began when the suspects were heading to the Santana cemetery where the funeral was taking place, and on the way “They began to destroy everything they found”including private and government vehicles, power plants and shops, as well as robbing passers-by.

“Taking into account the police cordon that was created in that area, the police immediately proceeded to arrest the then alleged perpetrators, who were subsequently referred to the Public Ministry for summary trial,” read a note.

The perpetrators of the crime were sentenced to ten to thirty days in effective prison and the payment of fees of 5,000 kwanzas (about 10 euros) for the public defender and a court fee of 15,000 kwanzas (28 euros) each.

The famous Kudurist’s funeral was marked by riots near the cemetery, prompting the police to intervene to disperse the huge human crowd with tear gas and rubber bullets which sparked panic among the crowd.

During the stampede, a minor was killed and 33 people were injured during the incidents at the funeral, including 16 police officers.
