Slovak government ousted in no-confidence motion in parliament

The Slovak Parliament approved on Thursday a motion of no confidence against the coalition government of centrist Prime Minister Eduard Heger, presented by his former liberal ally, which does not obligate but could lead to early elections.

In the 150-seat parliament, 78 deputies, two more than the required 76, voted in favor of the motion to overthrow the minority tripartite government led by Eduard Heger.

Slovakia’s President Zuzana Caputova will now have to name a new prime minister and could ask the Heger government to stay in office with reduced powers until an early vote can be held.

Several opposition and coalition parties indicated they preferred early elections, but this would require a two-thirds parliamentary majority. According to recent polls, the opposition would have a good chance of winning an election right now.

The liberal Solidarity and Freedom party, which withdrew from the coalition government in September, presented the motion of no confidence, accusing the executive of incompetence and losing its anti-corruption drive. Slovakia’s next regular parliamentary elections are scheduled for February 2024.
