Magistrates in shock with the Government for competitions for the European Prosecutor’s Office

The higher councils of the judiciary and the Public Ministry refuse to follow an opinion approved by the Minister of Justice. The institutional clash can lead the Government to change the law.

The method of choosing national candidates for the European Public Prosecutor’s Office is causing an institutional clash between the Ministry of Justice and the higher councils of the Judiciary and the Public Ministry.

As the Observer first-hand reported, Minister Catarina Sarmento e Castro approved an opinion of the Advisory Council of the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), dated January 24, which imposes a minimum number of three national candidates for the European Public Prosecutor’s Office so that the law is completed. Which means that the two candidates (Ivo Rosa and José Ranito) who had been considered eligible by the councils did not arrive.

The competitions for the selection of the European prosecutor are reopened
