UK government warns of cases of shigellosis in tourists returning from Cape Verde

British travelers are being asked to certify that they are complying with the precautions in the food, water and personal hygiene standard, due to the increase in shigellosis cases in Cape Verde.

The British government warned national citizens on Thursday of an “increase” in recent months in cases of shigellosis, a form of dysentery, in tourists returning from the island of Sal, in Cape Verde.

In an alert issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), addressed to British travelers, it is stated that “since August 2022 there has been an increase in cases” of shigellosis “among citizens returning from Cape Verde”.

He adds that other reports, from February of this year, “suggest that most of the reported cases occurred in the Santa María region, on the island of Sal,” therefore advises British citizens to follow the health advice issued by the health authorities.

Also known as bacterial dysentery, shigellosis is a form of bloody diarrhea food poisoning caused by shigella bacteria.

In this notice to British travelers updating the health situation in Cape Verde, the FCO also asks “certify” that they are complying with the “precautions in the food standardwater and personal hygiene”, such as washing hands and using only bottled water for drinking or brushing teeth.
