Return of Cyclone Freddy to Mozambique leaves 21 dead

The second passage of Cyclone Freddy through Mozambique since Friday caused 21 deaths in the province of Zambézia, in the center of the country, according to a new preliminary balance presented on Tuesday by the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD).

The numbers could increase as the evaluation of the losses is carried out.

The province was the most affected in Mozambique, counting 13,442 families affected since Friday, that is, some 65,500 people, in addition to thousands of self-built houses damaged or completely destroyed.

According to the authorities, the priority now is to help the survivors, many of whom have complained about the lack of water, food and hygienic conditions in the shelters, which are few for so many families.

Since the first passage of the cyclone, 18 days ago, 65 reception centersmany in schools, which house 41,300 people in different parts of the country, according to data from the INGD.

In the same period, 49,000 hectares of agricultural crops were destroyed, many of which were the main source of food for families. along with food stored at home and lost — fearing worsening food insecurity.

Only in the first passage of the storm, on February 24, 10 deaths had already been registered in Mozambique.

On the return to the mainland, the cyclone was especially relentless with Malawi, where nearly 200 people have already died from heavy rains and landslides in the southern part of the country.
