Portuguese-Canadian announces candidacy for Toronto mayor

Ana Bailão announced her candidacy for mayor of the municipality of Toronto. The Portuguese-Canadian promised to improve the public transport system.

The Portuguese-Canadian Ana Bailão announced this Friday that she will run for mayor of the municipality of Toronto in the July midterm elections.

“I decided to run for mayor (mayor). I have a plan to make municipal services more efficient,” the former councilor announced in a public letter.

In the same note, Ana Bailão, a native of Vila Franca de Xira (Lisbon) who has been in Canada since she was 15 years old, thanked all the community leaders, family members and friends who have sought her out in recent weeks and “encouraged her to apply for the municipal headquarters.

The Portuguese-Canadian was a council member from 2010 to 2022, representing the Davenport constituency and, most recently, the 18th Ward.due to the reformulation of the electoral districts, having obtained close to 84 percent of the votes.

“I have spoken to hundreds of Torontonians over the past four weeks. They all told me that they agree with me that municipal services need to improve urgent. Affordable housing is out of reach for many. The cost of living is high. I have the intention (if I am elected) to improve public transport, that is, its safety and efficiency, ”he stressed.

Graduated from the University of Toronto in Sociology and European Studies, since 2010 she has been responsible for the municipal affordable housing commission, having been nominated by “Mayor” John Tory as vice president of the municipality, also integrating the municipal executive.

Bailão also highlighted his passion for Toronto, which aims to “make services accessible, build more homesmake life more accessible”, promising on April 3 to present more details of its platform.

The Toronto City Council has scheduled the midterm elections to elect a new “Mayor” for June 26.

These elections follow the scandal of an intimate relationship between John Tory, with a former employee of his office, which led to his resignation as mayor last month.

The registration of official candidates begins on April 3 and ends on May 12.
