Soldier who admitted to killing Ukrainian civilian convicted in Russia of spreading “false information”

Daniil Frolkin admitted to killing a Ukrainian civilian and taking part in the robbery and looting of several civilians. He was sentenced to five and a half years of probation.

A Russian soldier who confessed last year to killing a Ukrainian civilian outside Kiev has been given a five-and-a-half-year suspended sentence by a military court in Russia. The court found him guilty of spread fake news about the Russian army.

In August last year, according to The Guardian, Daniil Frolkin, 21, said in an interview with the IStories news agency be responsible for the death of a civilian in Andriivka, a town occupied by Russian troops shortly after the Russian invasion began. The military trial took place in Khabarovsk, in eastern Russia.

According to The Moscow Times, Daniil Frolkin is one of four Russian soldiers identified by the news agency last year as involved in robberies, looting and killing civilians in the Ukrainian village. IStories identified Daniil Frolkin through photos that the military took with the cell phone stolen from one of the locals.

“I told him to kneel down,” the soldier then explained. “I put a bullet in his forehead. I killed someone,” he said during the phone interview. “I, a serviceman from unit 51460, Frolkin Daniil Andreevich, I confess all the crimes I committed in Andriivkafrom shooting civilians, robbing civilians and taking their cell phones and I confess that our command does not care about the fightersof all the infantry fighting at the front.”

“I killed one [civil]he said, according to IStories. “But he wanted to save as many people as possible.” The goal, he explained, was save other soldiers who were being sent to the “slaughterhouse”.

I will be arrested not for what I did in Ukraine, but for all the information I gave you. I can only confess everything and explain what is happening in the country. I think it would have been better if the war had never started.”

The former Russian soldier was part of a unit deployed in the Khabarovsk region that was accused of committing war crimes in Bucha. In the village of Adriivka, at least 40 of the thousand residents were killed during the occupation of Moscow troops.

Daniil Frolkin is the first soldier convicted in Russia for admitting to involvement in the murder of civilians. The sentence is intended to prevent other soldiers who have participated in war crimes from speaking out about their actions.
