The president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Thursday that Russian or Belarusian athletes who publicly show their support for the war with Ukraine will not be allowed to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“Our principles clearly state that any active support for the war is prohibited, and this includes the use of the Z symbol (associated with support for the Russian invasion), and also expressions of support on social media, among other things,” he said. Thomas. Bach, in Essen, Germany.

With the participation of Russians and Belarusians in the 2024 Paris Games, for which qualifications have already begun, Thomas Bach once again invoked the IOC’s political neutrality and the intention not to exclude athletes solely because of their nationality.

IOC president says it’s ‘too early’ to talk about Russia at Paris 2024

The IOC Executive Board will decide between March 28 and 30 on sanctions against Russia and Belarusthe status of athletes from both countries and solidarity measures with Ukraine.

The topics, related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, will be discussed in Lausanne, Switzerland, and after consultation with the IOC to its members, national Olympic committees, international federations and athletes, with the horizon of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The IOC recommended, on January 25, the readmission of athletes from both countries to international competitions, provided they comply with the principles of the Olympic charter and anti-doping rules, and “have not actively supported the war.”
