An arrest of the Russian president abroad, as contemplated in the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), would be a “War declaration” Moscow, warns Dmitry Medvedev, former president of the country, current vice president of the Russian Security Council and an ally of Putin.
“Imagine, clearly that such a situation is not going to happen, but still, imagine that it happened,” Medvedev says in an interview with the Russian media, quoted by the TASS agency, referring to a possible arrest of Putin. “The current leader of a country in nuclear energy arrives in Germany and is arrested. What does that mean? A declaration of war against Russia.

And, in the eyes of Medvedev, “in such a situation, all our weapons would turn to the Bundestag and so on.”
In the same interview, the Russian politician says that relations between Russia and the West, “which were already precarious, may now be in their worst state.” “Even when Churchill gave the ‘Iron Curtain’ speech [em março de 1946] our relations were better”, considers the Russian politician.
In the interview there was even room to criticize Western leaders. Medvedev classified the US as “the enemy”, but stressed that Washington has taken a “perfectly logical” position. In Medvedev’s eyes, this contrasts with the position of the European leaders. “What I cannot understand is the position of the European leaders, who are not capable of making decisions that benefit the Europeans. All their decisions benefit certain rival political groups or the Americans.”
Medveded considers that European nations “are no longer independent subjects of international law” and that they have become “simply a financial source [“cash cow”] to the United States at the expense of its taxpayers. “They don’t even do it for ideological reasons, but out of stupidity and cowardice.”
