Ismaili Center. PJ without evidence of terrorism and points to “psychotic break”

The Judicial Police denies that the attack on the Ismaili center was motivated by terrorist intentions, but assures that it is a possible “psychotic break” on the part of the attacker.

The national director of the Judicial Police (PJ) said on Wednesday that “there is not a single indication” that the attack on Tuesday at the Ismaili Center was a terrorist act, admitting that it was due to “a psychotic outbreak of the attacker.”

Luís Neves, who was speaking to journalists during a break in a conference in Lisbon, revealed that the PJ managed, through various national and international efforts, to map the life of the perpetrator of the crime, not having “a single sign” that one is facing “the religious radicalization of a person”.

The 24-year-old social worker and the 49-year-old “extraordinary” manager: the victims of the Ismaili Center attack

Although the case is still under investigation, Luís Neves said that there should be a psychiatric investigation into the state of the attacker, adding that this attack could be related to “a psychotic break”, so the crime is related to personal issues and not to a terrorist act. .

All the proceedings carried out by the PJ indicate so, he pointed out, that “we are dealing with a crime of a common nature”, that is, a “common crime”as a consequence of the murder of two women and serious injuries inflicted on a third person.

The attacker, hospitalized after being shot by the police, must not be discharged before a period of 10 days and only then will the conditions be met to be subjected to questioning by the investigating judge, added the national director of the PJ.

Twenty-four hours after the attack committed by the Afghan refugee, Luís Neves insisted that “what can be said is that all traces of crimes motivated by religion or terrorism are removed.

According to the national director of the PJ, the conclusion that there was no terrorist act, drawn after an “uninterrupted work” by the PJ throughout the night and in the last few hours, “changes everything” in terms of the degree of threat and the necessary police cooperation to deal with the situation.

Luís Neves said that the Afghan refugee, who previously passed through Greece and who intended to travel to Germany in the near future with his minor children, had adopted “a westernized way of life”, far from any act of radicalization.

The national director of the PJ revealed that this policeman “can already speak” with the attacker, so, based on his own statements, he already has “more information” that is essential to clarify what happened.

Regarding the possibility that the aggressor had a “psychotic break” and if this absorbed or dissipated the true motivation that led to the crime, Luís Neves limited himself to saying that there was “the somatization of the discontent” of the aggressor in “relation to this or those people”.

He went to a Portuguese class, killed two women and even tried to assault PSP agents. What is known about the attack on the Ismaili Center

Asked about the possible carrying out of searches by the PJ at the home of the perpetrator of the crime, the same person in charge clarified that a court order is expected for this purpose, taking the opportunity to say that in this investigation there is “total and integral support” from the Public Ministry .

During the conference, Luís Neves welcomed the rapid and effective intervention of the PSP shortly after the attack took place which, according to his words, prevented the number of deaths and injuries from being much higher.
