The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, claimed the “responsibility” of the People’s Republic of China for making Russia understand that a political solution to the war in Ukraine is necessary.
“It will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for the European Union to maintain a relationship of trust with China if no help check seek a political solution with a view to withdrawing Russia from Ukrainian territory,” Borrell said.
The People’s Republic of China “must take responsibility and help Russia understand”Josep Borrell also stated.
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy expresses these positions in a text that he published this Friday on his personal blog, the same day that he was scheduled to speak in Beijing.
Borrell’s presence at the Center for China and Globalization in Beijing was canceled after the head of the European Union carried out a Covid-19 test that indicated that he was infected with the disease.
“Russia seriously affected the international order” with a war that it considered “lightning” and that therefore “failed” to try to involve the PRCBorrell says in the same text of the speech that he planned to give this Friday in Beijing.
China “has important responsibilities,” adds Borrell, “because the country belongs to the UN Security Council.”
In violation of “international law” neutrality “is not credible”Borrell underlines in the same speech addressed to the authorities in Beijing.
“Neutrality in the face of violation of international law is not credible. We do not ask anyone to align with our own positions. We simply ask you to admit and acknowledge that there has been a serious violation of international law in this case. Therefore, I think it would be useful for President Xi (Jinping) to speak with President (Ukrainian, Volodymir) Zelensky, ”he proposes.
For Borrel, the People’s Republic of China can play a mediating role in the conflict, as happened recently “in the Middle East by facilitating the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.”
“Europe stands up for Ukraine and is preparing to one day welcome the country into the European family. But today the security of Europe is also at stake in Ukraine. That is why we will continue to support Ukraine in every way imaginable: military, financial, political, diplomatic and humanitarian,” Borrell said in the speech.
“The European Union’s support for Ukraine is in no way the expression of a form of loyalty or submission to another great power, as I hear it said, but the expression of our own will. Please understand this. We are fighting for our own destiny”, says Borrell, referring to the criticism against the European block that they say is under the orders of the United States.
The High Representative was scheduled to start a trip to the People’s Republic of China on Thursday that would last until Saturday.
Borrell had scheduled meetings with the Minister of National Security of the People’s Republic of China, Li Shangfu, and with the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Borrell’s trip to Beijing was scheduled after visits by the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, who also asked the Chinese head of state to intercede with Russia and establish contacts with the President. Ukrainian, as well as the contacts he maintains with the Russian head of state, Vladimir Putin.
