The US Army has announced that it has conducted live-fire testing of prototypes of a Stryker-based short-range air defense system with a 50 kilowatt laser.
General Robert Rush, head of the US Army’s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Department, told Defense News that the UAVs, which were used as gunnery targets and divided into 3 groups, were “scattering their remains” in the air. that the air defense system is “very effective”.
He pointed out that “although UAVs do not work with lasers, some difficulties remain in removing missiles, artillery and mortars”.
Having now received the first platoon group of systems, the Army is bringing the first two Directed Energy Maneuver-SHORAD prototypes to the Yuma test site to train with soldiers.
According to Rush, the third prototype will soon enter acceptance testing and the fourth prototype will be delivered in the next two months.
Rush said developmental testing with soldiers will continue next quarter, and in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023, the Army will begin developing tactics, technology and procedures for the systems. Combining this technology with combat capability.”
