Clashes in Sudan have forced more than 700,000 people to flee

The number of refugees in Sudan doubles in just one week, with more than 700,000 refugees now accounted for, according to figures released by the UN.

Violent clashes in Sudan, which began on April 15, forced more than 700,000 people fleeing the country, double that registered a week ago, the UN announced on Tuesday.

More than 800,000 people could flee the fighting in Sudan

“This number is more than double the number of internally displaced persons” recorded last Tuesday, said Paul Dillon, spokesman for the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The conflict in Sudan pits the army against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group.

Hostilities broke out on April 15.after weeks of tension over the reform of the security forces in the negotiations to form a new transitional government.

Both forces were behind the joint coup that ousted Sudan’s transitional executive in October 2021.
