Russia points to “serious obstacles” in peace process with Ukraine

According to the Russian diplomacy statement, Lavrov expressed his “thanks to China for its balanced position on the Ukraine crisis” during a meeting with Chinese envoy Li Hui.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov pointed out “serious obstacles” to finding a peaceful solution in Ukraine on Friday, when he received the Chinese envoy Li Hui in Moscow.

During the meeting, “the Russian Foreign Minister reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to a political-diplomatic resolution of the conflictpointing out the serious obstacles created by Ukraine and its Western allies for the resumption of peace talks,” according to a statement from Russian diplomacy.

“Sergei Lavrov expressed his gratitude to China for his balanced position on the Ukraine crisis and great appreciation for Beijing’s willingness to play a positive role in a deal,” the statement added.

Li Hui, a former Chinese ambassador to Moscow, was sent by Beijing to discuss a political solution to the conflict in Ukraine as part of a European tour.

During his visit to kyiv in early May, Li Hui talked with the head of Ukrainian diplomacy, Dmytro Kuleba, from whom he heard the call for “respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”.

In Berlin, the German government asked Hui to put pressure on Russia to withdraw troops from Ukraine.

Russia and China enjoy close relations, which have been strengthened economically and diplomatically since the start of the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Beijing has never publicly condemned the Russian attack, and Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Moscow in March to reiterate Beijing’s support for his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
