It was unexpected news. After knowing the results of the regional elections, which gave a clear victory to the PP, the head of the Spanish Government announced the holding of a meeting of the Council of Ministers “to dissolve Parliament and call general elections”. After communicating the decision to King Felipe VI, Pedro Sánchez told the country to “personally” assume the results of the regional elections – described in the Spanish press as a “defeat” for the PSOE – and to underline that the “Spaniards must have the floor to define the political course of the country.

In the council of ministers this afternoon, the decision was accepted and the Spanish general elections, initially scheduled for December, were brought forward to Sunday, July 23. Given the news, sources at the Moncloa Palace described Pedro Sánchez’s decision as “brave”, according to RTVE sources. But not everyone looked at the move in the same way. Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president-elect of the PP by the Community of Madrid and a strong critic of the Spanish leader, celebrated the advance of the vote, which she described as a sign of “surrender”. “The PSOE project is exhausted (…) Sánchez is in a dead end,” she defended in an interview with Telemadrid. “The faster, the better,” stressed the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, while the head of Vox, Santiago Abascal, described the decision as “the only positive news” in the last four years of Sánchez’s government.
