Coincidence or something else? Possible explanations for the Italian and Israeli “spy boat” accident

The tragedy off the Italian coast may have contours involving Italian and Israeli intelligence services. The authorities guarantee that they will investigate “until the last consequences”.

On Lake Maggiore, in Italy, the Gooduria, a tourist boat with a capacity for about two dozen people, was calmly sailing on a tourist tour. Until, unexpectedly, a violent storm capsized the boat, causing the death of four people on board: two Italians, an Israeli and a Russian citizen.

What at first seemed like a simple human tragedy, soon began to take on “strange” shapes, as information was gathered: the passengers were not registered at any hotel and, upon being identified, the Italian authorities determined that they were members of the Italian intelligence community, as well as spies and former spies from the Israeli Mossad. Within hours of the incident, the surviving foreigners were rushed back to Israel on chartered planes, without being questioned.

The case, which seems to have jumped straight from the pages of any John LeCarré novel, has raised a number of questions. What was the group doing in that area? Would it be a mere trip for pleasure or would they be on a business trip? And what about the evidence pointing to Russian involvement in the case? The hypotheses are varied, but the answers, for now, are scarce.
