IL says that it is seen in Europe as a “success story” and leaves with a reinforced objective: “We will do everything possible to elect two MEPs”

The Liberal Initiative president promised European partners that the Portuguese party will bring “good news from southern Europe” in the European elections and raised the bar for the Liberals until 2024.

Little more than 24 hours arrived in Brussels for Rui Rocha to present a Liberal Initiative with the ambition of being the “liberal voice of southern Europe” and realize that the party is recognized as a “success story” of liberalism among the partners. At least in the eyes of the liberal leader who leaves the capital of the European Union with the “reinforced conviction” and with revised ambition: “We will do everything possible to ensure that they are elected two MEPs”.

The electoral objective of IL for the European elections is outlined in the strategic motion that elected Rui Rocha and points to the “election of the first MEP liberal”. However, the IL president leaves Brussels believing that it is possible to do better and that “ambition” allows him to aim for the double in the 2024 elections. “If one congressman makes that much of a difference, imagine having two.” Regardless of the result, Rocha is confident that the IL “can really make a difference with a small representation as it did in the Portuguese Parliament” when it chose João Cotrim Figueiredo, one of the names pointed out as possible candidates for the electoral race.

With the issue of the European elections postponed for Madeira, Rui Rocha assures that the party is “focused” on the regional elections and that only after the results in the archipelago will there be a focus to start the “internal process that leads to issues of lists, programs and ideas” that the Liberals intend to take to the European Parliament, where they will join Renew Europe if they win representation.
