More than 150 people were evacuated this Wednesday from a building in Madrid where a conference organized by NATO was being held after a bomb threat that turned out to be a false alarm, reports El Mundo.
According to that newspaper, the alert was given around 2:30 p.m. in Madrid (1:30 p.m. in Lisbon), when the authorities received the threat that there would be an explosive device in the facilities of the Center for Technological Development and Innovation, an institution of the Ministry of Science. , in the center of the Spanish capital.
More than 150 people were evacuated from the premises and the streets surrounding the building were closed to traffic. Several nearby public buildings, such as the National Archaeological Museum and the National Library, were temporarily closed to the public.
For about two hours, several teams from the National Police, including units specialized in explosives, carried out an inspection of the building, without finding any explosive devices. Around 4:30 p.m. local time, 3:30 p.m. in Lisbon, the streets and the building where the congress was taking place were reopened.
The congress in question – “Science for Peace and Security” – focuses, according to El Mundo, on “dialogue and practical cooperation between NATO member states and partner countries on the basis of scientific research, technological innovation and knowledge exchange” on “activities relevant to civil security” and “NATO strategic objectives.”
