Portugal is the fifth Member State of the European Union (EU) with the highest percentage of workers who work long hours (9.0%), with the average in Europe being 7.1%, in 2023, according to Eurostat data.
According to the European statistical service, Greece is the country with the highest percentage of people working long hours (11.6%), followed by Cyprus (10.4%), France (10.1%), Italy (9.6 %) and Portugal (9.0). %).

Long working hours refers to workers who typically spend 49 hours or more per week at work and Eurostat also indicates that there is a much higher rate among self-employed workers (29.3% of the total of these workers) than among salaried workers (3.6% of the total).
