Collapse of stage at electoral campaign event causes eight deaths in Mexico

The stage structure of an election campaign in Mexico collapsed after a strong gust of wind, killing eight people and injuring 63 others, some of them seriously.

The collapse of a stage at an opposition campaign event for the presidential elections caused eight deaths and 63 injuries, said Samuel García, governor of the state of Nuevo León, in northern Mexico.

García told reporters Wednesday at the scene of the accident, which occurred that same day, that some of the injured were in serious condition. “We are still waiting for official data, we are waiting for the Public Ministry to do its part,” he added.

The accident occurred around 6:00 p.m. (00:00 this Thursday in Lisbon), during an event that was part of the campaign of Jorge Álvarez Máynez, presidential candidate of Movimiento Ciudadano, in the state capital, Monterrey.

According to the live broadcast of the event, carried out through social networks, the stage structure collapsed after a strong gust of wind, at a time when bad weather was forecast, with thunderstorms and heavy rains for the region.

Agents from the emergency forces and state Civil Protection and the municipality of San Pedro arrived at the scene to treat the injured.

“The injured members of my team are already being treated in the hospital. I return to the scene of the events to accompany the victims,” Álvarez Máynez wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

The candidate later told reporters that he would suspend all campaign events for the June 2 election due to the accident.
