Portugal guarantees Brazil that it will continue with “open arms” to immigrants

The Secretary of State affirms that the Portuguese Government assured the Brazilian authorities that it will continue the “policy of welcoming Brazilian immigrants with open arms.”

The Portuguese Government assured the Brazilian authorities this Monday that it will continue the “policy of welcoming Brazilian immigrants with open arms,” the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation told Lusa.

“We continue with a policy of welcoming this community with open arms,” Nuno Sampaio told Lusa after speaking in Brasilia with the secretary general of Itamaraty and interim minister of Foreign Affairs, Laura da Rocha.

The Secretary of State also reinforced the idea that the Brazilian community in Portugal (around 400 thousand) is “a very important community, very well integrated and very important for the Portuguese economy.”

At the beginning of the month, approved by the Council of Ministers, the Government put an end to the exceptional regime that allowed a foreigner to enter Portugal and only then apply for a residence permit and announced the creation of a mission structure to regularize pending processes. estimated at 400 thousand.

Among the 41 measures provided for in the Action Plan for Migration, there is also the transformation of the current mobility visa for immigrants from the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) into a community visa (Shengen), which allows movement within the Union European. and the creation of an Immigration and Borders Unit (UEF) in the PSP to monitor the presence of immigrants and create emergency care centers.

“The idea is to strengthen the mechanisms for good integration. I would like there to be no doubt about this. It is at the same time a humanistic perspective and a strengthening of relations with the CPLP countries,” the Secretary of State told Lusa, adding that the Government’s objective is “welcome, good integration, with humanism.”

“That is the perspective of Portugal and this Government,” he highlighted.

In order for the new plan to be implemented, especially with regard to immigrants who do not belong to the CPLP, the “migration plan presented foresees exactly this reinforcement of consular services,” he stated.

“Now we will see on the ground and in detail how resources can be directed,” but the “strengthening of consular capacity is planned and will be carried out on the ground,” he said.

The Secretary of State will also participate this Monday, at the Portuguese Embassy in Brasilia, on the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities.
