The Portuguese School of Macao was created in 1998 as heir to three Portuguese-language educational institutions: the Official Primary School, the Commercial School and the Liceu de Macao.

That same year, the Fundação Escola Portuguesa de Macau was created, the result of collaboration between the Portuguese State, the Fundação Oriente and the Associação Promotora da Instrução dos Macaenses.
