The leader of the European Parliament confirms his re-election to the position

“The pro-European forces [no PE] we will be able to continue cooperating,” highlighted Roberta Metsola when announcing her new candidacy for the presidency of the European Parliament.

The president of the European Parliament (EP), Roberta Metsola, confirmed this Monday that she had run again for the position and said that there is a majority in the institution that supports the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as president of the European Commission.

“The pro-European forces [no PE] We can continue cooperating”taking into account the results of the European elections, Metsola said this Monday, addressing journalists at the entrance of the extraordinary European Council to discuss, over dinner, the results of the elections.

“And I can confirm that most political groups in the EP support the main candidate Ursula von der Leyen“, presented by the European People’s Party (EPP, center-right), which won the elections from June 6 to 9, obtaining 190 of the 720 seats, he highlighted.

Metsola also said he expected “big developments tonight.”

The leader of the European Parliament also said that she has already presented her candidacy for re-election in office, whose deadline ends at noon, and that it will be voted on by her peers in the chamber.

Traditionally, the two political groups with the most votes – in this case the EPP (which includes the PSD and the CDS) and the S&D socialists (where the PS is located) – divide the five-year term of the president of the institution to the half.

EU leaders will meet this Monday, with Portugal represented by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, at an informal dinner where the names of the EU’s top officials will be discussed: president of the European Commission, with Ursula von der Leyen in the race, president of the European Council, with former Prime Minister António Costa as the favorite, and high representative for EU Foreign Policy, a position for which the Estonian Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, is in debate.
